· Newborn calves must receive colostrum as soon after birth as possible (<1 hour). Feed two quarts (1.9 liters) of colostrum immediately after birth, followed by an additional two quarts (1.9 liters) within 12 hours. Colostrum is required for disease-fighting antibodies that will help protect the health of the calf early in life. Never assume the calf has suckled.
· Start calves on Nutrena® DairyWay Calf Starter and Nutrena® DairyWay Milk Replacer as soon as colostrum feeding is complete.
· Provide fresh clean water continuously beginning by day four.
· Wean calves when they consume 2 lbs. (0.9 kg) of starter per day for at least 3 consecutive days.
· At 4 to 7 weeks of age, supplement Nutrena® DairyWay Calf Starter with approximately 1 lb. (.5 kg) of high-quality hay per day.
· When calves reach 150 lbs. (68 kg) of body weight, gradually switch them to Nutrena® DairyWay Grower / Developer.
· Keep all feeding utensils, equipment and calf pens clean. Promptly remove stale or moldy feed.
The key to a successful calf-rearing program is a healthy calf in a stress-free environment.
