Feeding Guidelines

1.     Introduce feed gradually over a 4- to 5-day period.

2.     Divide and feed in equal amounts at least 2 times a day at the same times of day.

3.     Weight Loss Goal:

o    Begin feeding LiteBalance® in the mid-range of the recommended feeding rate table below.

o    Feed with good quality hay 3 times a day or the pasture equivalent of 1.0 lb (kg) per 100 lb (kg) bodyweight per day.

o    Reduce feeding rate if weight plateaus before reaching target weight/desired body condition. Increase feeding rate if weight drops below target/desired body condition. Be sure to stay within the recommended feeding range for your horse.

4.     Weight Maintenance Goal:

o    Begin feeding LiteBalance™ in the mid-range of the recommended feeding rate table below.

o    Feed with good quality hay or the pasture equivalent of 1.5 lb (kg) to 1.75 lb (kg) per day.

o    Monitor weight/body condition and either increase or decrease the feeding rate as may be necessary to maintain proper body condition. Do not exceed the recommended feeding rate range. Be sure to stay within the recommended feeding range for your horse.

o    If feeding rates are required above the recommended range, switch to SafeChoice® Advanced Equine Formula or the appropriate Life Design® formula.

 Weight Management Tips

 

1.     Be patient. Slow and steady is the correct approach for reducing body weight and will help avoid stress and digestive upsets.

2.     Increase exercise levels gradually as your horse becomes more fit. Don’t overdo it.

3.     Feed horses separately to better control and monitor feed intake.

4.     Provide plenty of fresh, clean water at all times, except to hot or tired horses.

5.     Monitor your horse’s progress. Measure/weigh your horse weekly and record it on your LiteBalance® weight card.

6.       Work with your veterinarian to develop a total health care program including vaccinations, de-worming and dental care.
