Raising chicks is pure enjoyment. Good feed and good care will help ensure that these small, fuzzy birds start out healthy and remain healthy.
Before your chicks arrive, prepare a brooder to keep them warm and away from drafts. A cardboard box is ideal. Carefully suspend an incandescent light bulb about a foot above the brooder floor to provide warmth. A second bulb provides back-up heat in case one bulb burns out. Be sure to give chicks plenty of room so they can position themselves where they are comfortable. Be sure to raise the light as chicks grow and their need for artificial heat will diminish as they grow feathers.
Scatter feed on the brooder floor for very young chicks and then switch to chick feeders once they are a few days old. Make sure they always have clean water available. Soon your chicks will be able to leave the brooder and move into the coop.
